Choosing the Right Color Carpet

Steven Wallace • Apr 08, 2024

The tone of your room will be reflected in the selection of your carpet. This is why it is very important to first consider the right color. Depending on your choice of color you can help make your room warmer or cooler, cozier or more spacious with the assistance of natural lighting.

Each room can appear very different to one another based on the color carpet you install and the different lighting that is present. To find the right fit for you we suggest borrowing a carpet sample from your local retailer and test against each room to find the one(s) that best suit your home.

Another tip to keep in mind when selecting the right carpet for your room is to consider how each of these spaces will be used. Is it a place for exciting activities or for peaceful reflection? A place to host dinner or share in family time? Will the carpet stand out or shy away to let the furniture stand out?

Neutrals

Introducing neutral-toned carpet to your home will open up the option to decorating your room with more vibrant furniture and wall-paint. Color is not the only factor here as neutral-toned carpet can be reinvigorated with different patterns and textures, that work well with beige, cream, and charcoal neutrals. An exciting factor with neutral-tones is they can help make smaller rooms feel spacious and comfortable, this is what makes them a popular choice.

Mood

Using brighter colors in your home will work well with more active spaces such as playrooms and entertaining areas. For a calmer tone, best used in studies and bedrooms, it is recommended to use neutrals, blues, and greens. Help bring out the character of a room with brighter colors to stimulate your most active spaces or even declare a more dramatic statement with dark tones.

Dark or Light

There are a few key points to factor in when deciding on a dark or light tone for your carpet. To invite an intimate more comfortable feel, use warm/dark carpet colors. It is also important to ensure these darker tones do not clash with your furniture and wall paint.

Lighter tone carpets help bring about an open and modern feel to any room, but beware that this will make stains and dirt more visible.

Practicality

Active families with children and pets are more likely to use darker-tone carpets to help show colored lint and debris for quick and easy cleaning, while also helping hide possible soiling. Lighter-toned carpets are more family friendly for the individual or newly-wed looking to bring elegance and an open floor feel to their home. Minor dirt and intrusion brought in from the outside can also be easily detected and removed.

Fibre and Color

A useful tip to know is Nylons contain a number of bold colors as well as neutrals. Wool carpets are available in more neutral tones, and solution dyed nylon carpet comes in a subdued color palette with fewer options.

With these factors in mind it is now time to go and find samples to test in your home, create a plan for your different spaces, then make your final decision with confidence.
